Sexting & Child Sexual Abuse Images

MN currently does not have sexting-specific laws. All nude and sexually explicit images or videos of a youth age 17 and under constitutes as child pornography and is thus illegal.

The possession, distribution, displaying, and dissemination of child pornography is illegal and may have serious consequences such as felony charges, prison time, registration as a sex offender, and $20,000-40,000 fines.

Examples of image/video-based sexual violence, exploitation, or trafficking, include, but are not limited to:

  • Any sexual or nude image/video was made, shared, received or distributed while the person pictured/filmed was under the age 18
  • You were pressured, coerced, manipulated, tricked, or forced to pose or perform pornography
  • You freely consented to posing/performing but did NOT consent to the distribution/sharing to others or uploaded on the internet
  • You were photographed/filmed without your knowledge or consent
  • Someone else made a profit from sexual images/videos of you
  • A person used the images/videos to control you or get revenge
  • You exchanged sexual images/videos for survival, basic needs, money, or something of value
  • You were told your images/videos would be shared if you didn’t provide more images/videos
  • A partner pressures you to watch pornography with them or to imitate acts in pornography that you do not want to do
  • A co-worker uses/views pornography while at work
  • An adult showed a child pornography
