10 Things Men and Boys Can Do to End Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is modern day slavery. It is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel another person to provide labor or commercial sex against their will, and it is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises in the world. According to statistics put out by the Polaris Project 27 million are enslaved globally. There are things that we can all do to help end Human Trafficking; Women, Girls, Men, and Boys need to work together to end Human Trafficking. These are some of ten suggestions that Men and Boys can do to stop Human Trafficking: 3. Stop patronizing strip clubs: this is often not seen by men as women being coerced into this line of work because that would conflict with the pleasure that they are seeking. 4. Don’t Consume Pornography: this has the power to manipulate male sexuality and eroticize the violence against women. 7. Talk to men and boys about men’s issues in male spaces: this gives a chance to utilize barber shops, locker rooms, and fraternities for education on how men should interact with women. Be available whenever men or boys have questions about anything. 10. Raise sons and mentor boys to challenge oppression: this will raise boys to be accountable, respectful, and protective of all women and children. 9. Support creation of “John Schools:” these are education programs designed to educate customers apprehended by law enforcement who attempted to purchase sex.

New Law: Civil Actions in Sexual Assault Cases

DID YOU KNOW: There is a new law for Sexual Assault Victims/Survivors to take civil action. The Center’s interpretation of this law is that a victim/survivor can bring a civil suit with merit towards a human person, organization, association, corporation, limited liability. Includes state and federal institutions if within their immunities. If they are 18 years or older they have six years from the last assault to bring a lawsuit and then they would be time barred. If someone is under the age of 18 they can bring the civil action at any time. If someone is assaulted under the age of 14 they can only bring charges until the age of 24 to bring a lawsuit. Prior to 2013 people who were 24 or older only had the six year window to report and now they have this three year window to report an assault that happened at any age. This three year window is from 2013-2016 and after that they will be time barred to that six year window. They have THIS THREE YEAR WINDOW TO BRING A CIVIL SUIT TIME BARRED PRIOR TO THIS NEW LAW. They would need to be referred to an attorney that specializes in this type of case. If you have any questions or need more clarification please take a look at the Minnesota Statutes: MN Stat. 541.073 or feel free to message us or call us at the Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center and we would be happy to help.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

April 22-April 28 marks National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. In Minnesota, we remember victims of all forms of crime. We remember how far we’ve come in securing the rights of crime victims’ and yet how far we still have to go to ensure that every victim of a crime receives sensitive and comprehensive help. Some may wonder what can I do to make a difference, and simply to “Start by Believing” can make all the difference in the world. Later this week, we will have a post with websites that you can check out for more information and ideas on how to get involved and make a difference! Remember April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month!
